Karen Neuman Allen is the Director of the Social Work Program at Indiana University – Bloomington. She received her MSW and Ph.D. from Wayne State University.

Karen is a licensed clinical social worker as well as a certified trauma therapist and her hospital and private practice involves working with individuals with co-occurring disorders, severe illnesses and traumas such as burns, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, cancer and strokes.

Karen has published over twenty peer-reviewed articles and is the co-author of Social Work Practice in Healthcare: Advanced Approaches and Emerging Trends. Her current areas of research include recovering from trauma, domestic violence, and quality of life and chronic disease.

Robyn D. Walser, Ph.D. is Director of TL Consultation Services, Associate Director at the National Center for PTSD and is Associate Clinical Professor at University of California, Berkeley. As a licensed psychologist, she maintains an international training, consulting and therapy practice.

Dr. Walser is an expert in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and has co-authored 3 books on ACT including Learning ACT, The Mindful Couple and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress disorder. She also has expertise in traumatic stress and substance abuse and has authored a number of articles and chapters and books on these topics.

Tim Desmond is a student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, the author of Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy: Mindfulness-Based Practices for Healing and Transformation, and the co-founder of Morning Sun Mindfulness Center. He travels regularly, teaching mindfulness and self-compassion practices to professional and popular audiences, including Yale Medical Center and the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. He recently launched a 12-week online training called Foundations of Self-Compassion through his website www.timdesmond.net

In this episode of The Trauma Therapist | Podcast I share just some of the many lessons I’ve over the course of the past year from interviewing my amazing guests.

I’ve gained a new appreciation for the work we do as trauma therapists, and have also developed a new understanding of what’s involved in becoming a healthy, fulfilled and fully-informed trauma worker. (Hint: Reading the latest trauma books is one part.) This last bit has been something that’s really inspired the types and variety of individuals I’ve been inviting on to the podcast.

Elisabeth is a survivor of family-controlled child sex trafficking and sex abuse.  Her education in social work and her personal experiences as a survivor inform her intimate dialogue about the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of trauma recovery, which she discusses on her blog at BeatingTrauma.com. 

Elisabeth writes about breaking the cycle of abuse through conscious parenting, navigating intimate relationships as a survivor, balancing the memory recovery process with daily life, coping with self-doubt, and overcoming the physical symptoms of a traumatic childhood.

Elisabeth guides other survivors as they navigate life and parenting with private sessions, workshops and a forum.  She also works with media and organizations through her workshops, writing, and speaking.

Tonya is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC), and Certified Trauma Therapist (CTT).

Tonya’s area of concentration has been in the work of addiction and trauma healing.

Tonya developed and implemented the Midwest’s first trauma intensive, located in Bloomington, Ill, and which goes by the name, Healing Within – A Trauma Recovery Program. Tonya is owner of her own practice, Tonya L. Bassett Counseling located in Bloomington, Illinois.

Paula Thomson, PsyD, is Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, California State University, Northridge (CSUN). She is a licensed Clinical Psychologist, certified Sport Psychologist, and works in private practice in California.

Paula is Co-Director of the Performance Psychophysiology Laboratory at CSUN, adjunct faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute and Professor Emeritus at York University’s Departments of Theatre and Graduate Studies (Canada).

She was a professional dancer and continues work as choreographer and movement coach in dance, theatre and opera. In 2013, she was named one of the top 20 female professors in California.

In collaboration with Dr. S. Victoria Jaque, Dr. Thomson is an active researcher in the field of psychophysiology. Together they are investigating the effects of stress on performing artists, athletes and patients with functional disorders. They have extensive publications in journals and edited books, most notably Encyclopedia of Creativity, Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts, Creativity Research Journal, Attachment and Human Development, Journal of Trauma and Dissociation among others.

Marjie Roddick is a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor. After finishing grad school at Gonzaga University in 2011 Marjie started working part-time as a therapist for an agency and providing services for teens and adults who have experienced sexual violence, domestic violence, and crime victimization.

In 2014 Marjie started her own private practice in Spokane Valley, Washington. She is a member of the American Counseling Association and am in the process of becoming a Certified Trauma Treatment Specialist as a member of the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists.

Marjie has provided articles as a topic expert on GoodTherapy.org and is a provider for Open Path Psychotherapy Collective, a non-profit organization helping people access affordable counseling services.
